Ok, it was warm yesterday. . .

Spring is here!  Or at least it was here a couple days ago, and I feel certain it will be back in a minute.  And with that in mind. . .

Hemlines are retreating, toes are peeping, skin is showing and it’s nearly time for shorts!  Shorts make me so happy!  (Almost as happy as jeans, but that’s a different article.). I did a little short shopping this week and there are so many cute styles and colors for spring! There are a myriad of casual shorts, preppy shorts, dressy shorts, beachy shorts. . . I’m telling you, the Short has come a long way in versatility; there’s one for every occasion.  And all my favorite shops have a huge variety to choose from.  Here are some of my favorites!

First stop is Express where I easily found 8 pairs of shorts I could be in a committed relationship with, BUT I whittled it down to 3 because I know how valuable your time is!

Tiered Crochet Shorts

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 4.53.09 PMI think these are very sweet and pretty.  I love the lace detail.  They’re feminine and sexy.  For me, I’d pair them with a pretty top and heels for drinks on the patio.

High Rise Lace Shorts

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 4.53.41 PM

These I love!  How fancy! I love making shorts dressy and elegant.  I’d put these with a slinky black top and strappy heels, and go on a date with my husband!

Asymmetrical Hem Skort

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 4.54.06 PM

I know, I haven’t heard the word ‘skort’ used in many years, either.  And I seem to remember it described something not that cute, but THESE, on the other hand are very fun!  Skirt in the front, shorts in the back;  what’s not to love?  And I’m a big fan of the asymmetrical detail in front!

Michael Kors – Stud Side Twill Shorts

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 5.45.24 PMI saw this cute little number in Michael Kors, and I could actually hear the gold studs singing, “Take us straight to Tiffany!” True story.

J. Crew Chino Short

Jcrewblue
In my opinion, some of the best all-around shorts come from J. Crew.  I’ve been a fan of their chino short for a long time.  It wears great and is very flattering.  And there is truly one for everyone.  This year they have the chino in 10 shades of Spring-y fun colors, AND you can get it in a 3″, 4″, 5″, 7″ or 9″ inseam.  Literally, in whatever length you’re most comfortable.

Sometimes, the best pair of shorts isn’t a pair of shorts at all.  I am referring, of course, to the cropped pant which gets to enjoy many long hours out of the closet as it takes us seamlessly from Spring thru Summer and into Fall.

Slim Cropped Pants

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 6.16.45 PMThe Gap has a great pair of cropped pants that comes in a variety of colors and styles including seersucker (SEERSUCKER!!) I think these work so nicely with sandals or heels or even flip flops and a cute top when it’s a little too chilly for shorts, or shorts aren’t quite right for your event.

Twill Drapey Utility Crop

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 6.19.48 PMWhite House Black Market also has very cute cropped pants this season!  I’m a big fan of this cute utility pant.  It’s like a cargo pant, but super lady-like!

So, me and my new shorts will be waiting until the warm weather swings back into Dallas.  According to my super-spy weather app, that should hopefully be just in time for Easter weekend!  Fingers crossed!

xoxo,

Sandy

Meet me at the Barre

If you are looking for a new workout to switch up your regular routine, then FlyBarre at FlyWheel is for you.  But I must warn you, this workout is a killer!

photo 2

FlyBarre is a total body sculpting class that blends the best of light weight training, dance, and core strengthening exercises. Using small intense interval exercises choreographed to immersive and inspiring music, FlyBarre quickly reshapes the body for lean, strong, and elongated muscles.

Classes are highly energetic, fast-paced, and fun. They change the routines frequently and use a wide variety of props to tighten muscles and keep things interesting.

Kelly Hershman, FlyBarre instructor

The HOH Girls took Kelly’s FlyBarre class at the Plano location.  Let me just say that she is a beast!    I will be totally honest….It. Is. Not. Easy.  Never before have such small movements caused so much pain.  But hey, no pain, no gain, right?  I heard that the Victoria Secret models use this exercise to keep in shape.  So if it’s good enough for the Angels, it’s good enough for the HOH girls!

Trust me ladies, if you want a beach ready body by summertime, I suggest taking this class.  See you around the studio!

Spring is in the Air!

Ladies, Spring is coming!  Ok, so today doesn’t really feel like it, but I am confident that very soon my day dreams of sandals, cropped pants and strappy tops will be a reality.  With that in mind, I’m making sure I’m stocked up with all the things I need for Spring and Summer.  For me, that includes a case or so of sunscreen.  I’m a firm believer in the youth-preserving benefits of keeping your skin protected from harmful UV rays.  In addition to that, I happen to have the sort of complexion that burns easily and freckles often, and is extremely prone to skin cancer.  So, believe me when I say, I take sunscreen very seriously.  Unfortunately, sunscreen can sometimes be a pain in the neck.  You need to put it on under make-up, so do you get a moisturizer that has it included, or just use a regular sunscreen that’s kinda greasy?   Or what if you already have your make-up on?  You don’t want to mess up your gorgeous face!

I’m happy to tell you about one of my favorite things today!

Mineral Powder SPF 50 from Renee Rouleau

spf powder

I discovered this product last summer, and love it! This lightweight, water-resistant mineral powder provides UVA and UVB sun protection, and will not irritate your skin.  The self-dispensing powder brush makes this sheer formula easy to apply and reapply throughout the day. Available in fair, medium and tan (I use fair).   This product has also been awarded the Active Seal of Recommendation by the Skin Cancer Foundation and is recommended for use on the face, hands, chest and any exposed areas.  Also, when you run out (which I haven’t yet, by the way) you can simply buy a refill for less than half the original cost.

I put this on after I apply my make-up, and during the Spring and Summer months, I keep it in my purse so that I can reapply for those spontaneous trips to the park, or for margaritas on the patio!

I can’t say enough nice things about this product.  Particularly because it has made protecting my fair skin 10 times easier than it used to be!

XOXO,

Sandy

Nawlins on My Mind

With Mardi Gras on the horizon, I was taking a little stroll down Memory Lane, and reminiscing about times I’ve spent in New Orleans.  I mean, who doesn’t remember fondly the first time they went to Pat O’Briens, and then stumbled down the street overjoyed at the idea of taking your Hurricane with you!  Because if there’s anything better than strolling down Bourbon St. with a drink in your hand, I don’t know what it is!

SO, with my warm, fuzzy memories fresh on my mind I dedicate this post to:

The Hurricane!

hurricaneCocktail

Now, Pat O’s has their delicious mix for sale that you can order and make your very own Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane right at home.

Hurricane mix

But, when I get a whim and want to walk around my cul-de-sac with a hurricane in my hand while my husband throws beads at me, I don’t have time to wait for shipping!  So, I’ve collected a few excellent Hurricane recipes you can make from the comfort of your home and then stumble down the street at your discretion.  Or sip them in moderation like a grown up.  Whichever, really.

First up, (home court advantage) is the Texas Hurricane.  With half a dozen different alcohols involved, this one has something for everyone.  Boy, is everything bigger in Texas!

The Texas Hurricane

Ingredients: (serves 2)

2 cups crushed ice

1/4 cup rum

1/4 cup coconut rum

1/4 cup vodka

1/4 cup gin

1/4 cup triple sec/grand marnier

1/2 cup orange juice

1/4 cup pineapple juice

1/4 cup grenadine syrup

1/4 cup 151 proof rum

optional garnish: Orange slices, lime slices, maraschino cherries

Fill a hurricane glass with ice.  Pour in rums, vodka, gin, triple sec, orange and pineapple juice and grenadine.  Stir well, then pour the 151 over the back of the spoon to float the liquor on top of the drink.  Garnish with orange, lime, and a cherry.

hurricane texas

Next up is the Storm of the Century Hurricane.  This one is a slight variation with a nice berry flavor from Chambord.

Storm of the Century Hurricane

Ingredients: (serves 2)

2 cups ice

1/4 cup light rum

1/4 cup dark rum

1/4 cup cocunut rum

1/4 cup vodka

1/4 cup gin

1/4 cup Chambord (raspberry liquer)

1/4 cup triple sec/grand marnier

3/4 cup orange juice

optional: orange slices, maraschino cherries

Fill a hurricane glass with ice.  Add rums, vodka, gin, Chambord, triple sec and orange juice.  Shake gently, and garnish with oranges and cherries.

hurricane storm

And, if you want to make hurricanes for a group, my personal favorite, the Hurricane Punch Bowl!

Hurricane Punch Bowl

Ingredients:

12 ounces light rum

12 ounces dark rum

10 ounces grenadine, or passion fruit syrup

10 ounces fresh orange juice

10 ounces sour mix, or fresh lime juice

3 tablespoons superfine sugar (leave out if you prefer a less-sweet beverage)

1 large orange, cut into 1/4-inch thick slices

Directions

Mix all the ingredients in a tall pitcher or large pot and stir to dissolve the sugar. Pour into a punch bowl and add the ice cubes and orange segments. Serve in tall glasses over ice with straws.

We’re still a couple weeks out from Mardi Gras, but I hope these recipes put you in the mood.  Try a few out this weekend, and let us know which is your favorite!

xoxo, Sandy

A Handbag Affair

Let me introduce you to my current love affair. Meet Rebecca Minkoff’s handbags. They have my heart and soul. Minkoff’s playful and subtly edgy designs take a typical accessory and turn it into a fashion necessity. With trademark leather, studs and hardware you are sure to find something you love as much as I do.

My current favorites include Cupid and the Mini Affair Diamond Quilt with, and without, studs.

Hello Cupid
Cupid

“Cupid” is a versatile, structured satchel with gold hardware. With the cross-body strap, you can literally take this bag anywhere. It retails for $425. (That makes it an absolute STEAL!)

Meet the Mini Affair Diamond Quilt
Mini Affair

The silver Mini Affair” is the perfect evening bag. It has enough room for all your evening essentials and wears as well as some of those other extremely high priced brands. This bag retails for $195, so buy it in every color possible.

Mini Affair Diamond Quilt with Studs

This Mini Affair is quite possibly my favorite bag. In grey and neon pink, this handbag takes you from day to evening with pizazz, style and grit. It’s gorgeous and tough all at the same time. Retailing for $225, you’ve got to have one for yourself this season.

Rebecca Minkoff launched her line of handbags in 2005. Since then she has expanded into accessories, apparel, footwear, jewelry and men’s leather goods. Shop, fall in love and buy your Rebecca Minkoff handbags at http://www.rebeccaminkoff.com or in Dallas at Neiman Marcus.

Pink Champagne for Valentines Day

Valentines Day is this Friday, and there is no better way to celebrate and toast to love than with a glass of pink champagne.  Our favorite is Veuve Clicquot Rose.  It is absolutely fabulous!  Add a few raspberries and voilà, you have a beautiful Valentines Day drink.

Super Bowl Style 2014

DSC_0002

So the Cowboys didn’t make the Super Bowl, or the playoffs, again, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look fun and fabulous for the Super Bowl this weekend.  Tiffany and I went back to one of our favorite shops, Gameday Cloth, at The Shops at Legacy to outfit ourselves for the big game.

DSC_0025

Tiffany is wearing OCJ Apparel slate jeans in Royal.  These jeans are super comfortable and fit like a dream.  Her tank is Sketch Rose from Chaser Brand.  The wrap is by Ruana, it is so versatile and can be worn in so many ways.

DSC_0053

Jewelry is the perfect way to add a pop of color to any outfit.  Gameday cloth has a wide variety of jewels that can compliment any outfit.

DSC_0036I am also wearing OCJ jeans in royal.  I just love the fit and feel of these jeans, plus the color is spot on with this seasons blue trend.  The shirt is from Umano. Not only is this tee really cute,  it is also fashion with a purpose.  Each sale provides a under privileged student a backpack of school supplies.  I  also choose the Ruana wrap, but in grey.  This wrap is perfect for living in Southern climates.  It has just enough warmth without a lot of bulk.

DSC_0060I accented my blue and grey apparel with green jewelry.  Although I’m not a Seahawks fan, the football festivities are just another excuse to dress up and accessorize.

DSC_0040If you don’t want to wear anything that resembles a Bronco or a Seahawk, this stylish Lee Lee Rox football hat will add a sparkly sporty look to anything your wearing.

Thank you Jana at Gameday cloth for making our afternoon of shopping and champs a success!  To keep Hell on Heels at the top of our game, Gameday Cloth is our go to store to be sporty chic.

Cheers,
Suzanne

Walking is the new Running

I have something to say that I think many of you will find shocking. . .

Suzanne is not a nice person.

I know what you’re thinking; “But, Suzanne seems so sweet and bubbly and fun to be with!!”  All that may be true, but down deep she’s evil and sadistic.

Take Monday, for example. .  .

We met up at the gym for our normal Monday You’ll-Never-Believe-What-I-Ate-This-Weekend workout and chat.  I had been a bit liberal with my food and alcohol consumption on Sunday, so I felt compelled to run on the treadmill, but I didn’t really want to.  (Does anyone really ever WANT to run?)  So, Sue said, “I saw this great treadmill workout on Pinterest, let’s do it!”

So, this workout is called The Boo-Tay Workout, by Krislyn over at TopKnot Life and boy, is it ever!  It lays out what you are to do very specifically and all you have to do is follow it. . . if you dare!

boo-tay

You can easily add or subtract minutes, incline or speed as necessary to suit yourself. I’ll be honest, I had to lower my speed a couple times on those really high inclines.  But, don’t be deceived by the cute font, this workout was HARD.  I was dripping with sweat, my heart was racing, my legs and boo-tay were on fire, and I was cursing Suzanne!

Generally, I like to think this is how i look on the treadmill. . .

treadmill cool

However, I’m pretty sure this might have been more accurate. . .

treadmill funny

It really was a great workout and very challenging, which let’s face it, we all need sometimes.  If I let myself, I can easily become comfortable in my workout routine, which sort of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? Despite all my complaining (and Suzanne-defaming) I will definitely do this workout again, but I’ll make sure I’ve had my Wheaties, and the safety strap is securely attached!

XOXO,

Sandy
