Bermuda Adventures with HOH!

When Hell on Heels takes a vacation, you know it will be amazing! Suzanne and I spent a week at Tucker’s Point Resort in Hamilton, Bermuda. Tucker’s Point offers everything imaginable for the perfect vacation. Gorgeous pink sandy beaches and infinity pools, activities that will keep you busy like golf and diving, fine dining or casual meals on the patio and a relaxing spa ensure that your stay will be memorable. Since we can’t stay still for too long we also ventured into town for food, cocktails and shopping on Front Street and a few field trips to experience the local scene.

Agave Margarita

This triple sec-free recipe was inspired by one from Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco.

Kosher salt
2 lime slices or wedges
1/4 cup tequila
2 tablespoons agave syrup (nector)
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

  • Pour some kosher salt into small dish.  Rub 1 lime slice over half the rim of an Old Fashioned glass.  Dip rim of glass into salt.
  • Combine tequila, agave syrup, and juice in a cocktail shaker; fill with ice and shake well.  Strain into prepared glass.  Garnish with lime slice.

Enjoy!  Happy Cinco de Mayo ya’ll!

Cheers!

Cody Canada And The Departed At The Granada Theater

Let me start by saying, first and foremost, I am a music fan.  That doesn’t always mean that I like what’s on top of the charts, nor does it mean I am a “music snob” who only tries to find the obscure music so I can impress my friends.  It means I like good music as defined by my own tastes.  With that in mind, I set out to find some good local live music in Dallas and happened upon Cody Canada and The Departed at the Granada on Saturday, April 6.

For those of you who don’t know, the Granada is an institution in Dallas.  Located on Greenville Avenue in the famous Lower Greenville section of town, it’s been around since the 40’s and was originally a 700-seat movie theater.  All these years later, it is now a fantastic place to check out live music, and the acts that come through literally run the gamut.

On this night, Cody Canada and The Departed (or simply, The Departed) were onstage.  Cody Canada was formally in a group called Cross Canadian Ragweed, which gained some level of fame in the 2000’s with their brand of Alternative Country, or as it has been called, Red Dirt or Country Folk Music.  His new band, The Departed, really tapped into several different genres of music.  If I had to define the influences, I would call it Willie Nelson country, crossed with a little bit of 90’s grunge, and a touch of ZZ Top/Stevie Ray Vaughn Texas Blues sprinkled on top for good measure.

Seeing The Departed at the Granada was a treat since it is such an intimate venue.  The acoustics are great and the crowd was singing along with every song.  Having gone into the show without any prior knowledge of Cody Canada or his brand of music, I came away extremely impressed.  The Departed is a 5-piece band where three of the members take over lead vocals at various times.  I have to admit, the lead guitarist, Seth James, has a voice that I really liked.  It’s much more blues influenced, while Cody’s voice has that country angle to it.

Overall, I would give the show a big thumbs up and would strongly recommend you check out Cody Canada and The Departed.  They have a new album that came out the end of last year called Adventus, and probably my favorite song of the night was the lead single off the record called Worth The Fight.   And if you have a chance, definitely get to the Granada.  Venues like this simply don’t exist anymore, so it’s an absolute treat to have one in town.

Laura Bush’s Texas Governor’s Mansion Cowboy Cookies

DSC_0017

I’m warning you, these are pretty darn good and addicting!  This is absolutely my favorite cookie recipe.  Thank you former First Lady for this delicious recipe!

3 cups flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tbsp baking soda
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tbsp vanilla
3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
2 cups sweetened coconut flakes
2 cups chopped pecans (8 oz)
  • Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a second bowl, beat the butter on medium speed until smooth. Add the sugar and brown sugar and beat for another 2 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla.
  • Stir in the flour mixture, blending until just combined. Add the chips, oats, coconut, and pecans and stir until fully incorporated.
  • Drop by rounded tablespoon onto an ungreased baking sheet, making sure to allow plenty of room between cookies. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are set and golden brown. Allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 1-2 minutes before placing on a cooling rack.
Cheers!
